Hi everyone. Welcome to the Customer Success Playbook podcast, actionable insights and practical strategies for enhancing customer success. I'm your host Roman Reaugh, and with me as always, my co-host, Kevin Metzker. Kev, happy Monday. Excited for, uh, our conversation and guest today.
Kevin Metzger:Yeah, happy Monday. Uh. Also very excited. We're thrilled to have Marcello Calbucci joining us today. Marcello is a technologist, innovator, and the author of the PR FAQ framework. He'll share his insights on how organizations can harness Amazon's PR FAQ method to drive innovation and ensure customer success. Marcello, welcome to the show. Thank you for having me folks. I'm really excited to be here.
Roman Trebon:Let's dive in. So we want to get to your number one tip for team looking to leverage PR FAQ framework to enhance customer success. But I think before we jump into the number one tip, once you give our audience a little background on what is the PR FAQ framework for those that aren't familiar with it.
Marcelo Calbucci:Uh, let me also tell a little bit of my story, which was, I've been an entrepreneur for 18 years and I joined Amazon, which is a very big company. And in the first few weeks that I was at Amazon, I was fascinated by this framework they invented more than 20 years ago called the PRFQ, which stands for Press Release and Frequently Asked Questions. And the first thing that came to my mind is like, wow, a lot of people could benefit from this framework. Like people in other organizations, founders, innovators. Executives leaders everywhere could really benefit off this, and there wasn't a lot written about it. So when I left Amazon, I decided to write the book on the topic and make some adaptation. So we would work outside of Amazon and PR think you really stands for press release in frequently asked. questions. And it's a format, it's a six page format, quite structured, so that people can scover, debate, and decide on a strategy and a vision for anything. It could be a new business, it could be a new product, a program, a service, even a policy, uh, or a process within an organization. And what makes this framework really powerful? is that you have to write a narrative that is coherent, right? You have to tell a story that makes sense. And for that to work, you have to incorporate the feedback from lots of folks on your organization, right? So you want to go out and ask, you know, folks on the UX team and the engineering team and the product team and the customer success team for them to look at different angles of this strategy and help. figure out what's going to deliver the best value for the customer, uh, at the end of the day, right? So when teams write a PRFAQ, usually it's a process that should take about two weeks. They make a decision like, should we pursue this opportunity or not? Or should we not pursue it now and pursue it later? So the PRFAQ is a great decision tool for organizations of all sizes, from one person to a thousand people.
Roman Trebon:So I'm so used to companies, uh, that, you know, they're using PowerPoints, told business plans, and they're still left struggling with alignment and decision making. From your experience, why is it PRFAQ framework? How does that get alignment and really align people across the organization on, on what the, what the company's
Marcelo Calbucci:trying to accomplish? So the way the PRFQ framework really works is you're going to have a person who is usually going to be the project leader. It could be a director, a VP, an executive or a product manager or a customer success manager that wants to drive an opportunity initiative, right? So this person is responsible for writing the document, but they don't write alone. Right. So they consult with lots of teams, both the team that's going to execute that the teams are going to be impacted by it, stakeholders, executives, and they go and incorporate that feedback into a better version of the document. So everyone feels like they were part of this. The difference between a PowerPoint style, uh, proposal is that, uh, is usually someone doing that in a backroom. And they come for a meeting and they present, right? So they're pushing something into everyone and it becomes like a battle of opinions and like buy ins and like, you have to play the politics game. Uh, and it's really not productive, right? For good, fast decision. So the PRFAQ avoids that because it's naturally involve people in developing that idea, right? So at the end of the day, what you have is, is a document that is more robust than just a PowerPoint with a. Presentation, uh, full of bullet points, right? And I can talk to a lot about why powerpoint has problems, uh, and issues Um, but that would be a whole podcast about it
Kevin Metzger:I know you get into it in the book, but it it's interesting I just heard you say the powerpoint is kind of like a push Would you say that prfaq is more of a pull? It's kind of like you're actually trying to get people By getting people involved, you're bringing people along and trying, and they're already buying in to the idea prior to ever going into a discussion about, as the presentation on the topic, most of the room you've got bought in to begin with.
Marcelo Calbucci:I love that description, Kevin. I'm going to have to use that in an article. PowerPoint is a push. Uh, but, but you got it right. So like people are. Contributing to this idea and they are looking from their perspective, right? So you're going to have the the person on the legal team looking at from a legal lens, right? Is this strategy what makes sense from a legal perspective and you're going to have someone from finance looking from the finance angle So lots of people are like contributing to make this a into a more truthful idea Our
Roman Trebon:audience, Marcel is going to join us all week, so make sure you check out the website to learn more. Go to theprfaq. com. Uh, you can check out the book there. It's chock full of resources. Uh, great info as we continue to have this conversation. Marcello is going to join us on Wednesday. He's coming back and he's going to talk about, uh, we're going to explore in our one big question segment, some of the common pitfalls and best practices teams encounter when implementing the PR FAQ and, you know, how to overcome them or what you should look for as you implement this in your organization. So per audience, thank you as always for listening. Please like us, subscribe to the show. You'll get notifications when our next, next episode comes out. And until then, Kevin, keep on playing.
